I tried to make it easy for anyone with no prior knowledge of Linux to understand, but let me know if anything is unclear.Įdit: The saga continues. (optional) Enjoy your 15 FPS in Breath of the Wild because all you had on hand was a GTX 650 Ti. If it complains about the Xserver or Nouveau, something went wrong boot back into safe mode and try again. If all goes well, you now have Nvidia drivers. Select "yes" for any prompts it gives you. If you can't remember the long-ass name, type "dir" and hit enter first to show a list of files. If you put the driver somewhere other than ~/ you'll need to change to that directory first. Type "sudo sh" followed by the full filename for the Nvidia driver package. Login and type "sudo service lightdm stop". Hit CTRL+ALT+F1 to drop into the terminal. You should now be booted with Nouveau disabled. (Select the second option in both menus.) You might be able to get into the terminal from there, but damn if I know how to do it. If you end up in grub, reboot and try again. Only hit it *once*, or it'll kick you out into grub - you don't have to spam it like you would to get into your BIOS menu. Immediately after your BIOS splash screen, hit ESC. Put the driver in your Home directory (~/) Depending how old your GPU is, you'll need either 470.57.02 or 390.144.

The method that finally worked for me was:ĭownload the driver from Nvidia ( ). Most of the suggestions I found online either didn't work or damaged my system to the point of needing a reinstall. The drivers refused to install from the driver manager no matter what I tried Nouveau seems to have been the culprit. After a night of pulling my hair out over this, I thought I should document it somewhere, that others might benefit from my pain.
